This Week In Great Moments In Marketing

A friend of mine snapped this pic of a Hanes ad as he was going through security at JAX. Aside from the fact that I'm impressed that he got away with taking a picture in an alleged "high security" environment, I'm amused, flabbergasted, and kind of appalled at the targeted advertising in this particular venue.

It just goes to show that there is always an opportunity!

Controversial Guinness Ad Not Real

Apparently lots of other people already knew this, judging by my inbox after I ran the clip earlier. I apologize for not spending more time keeping up with Internet memes.

The reviews for the new Guinness advertising campaign are in - and they are a marketer's dream.
One comment on YouTube.com, where the "Share One With a Friend" spot was posted several weeks ago on its way to becoming a smashing viral success, called the spot "Brilliant." Another declared it "The Best Commercial Ever."But if you're expecting Guinness to be happy about it, don't be.
"Please be assured that Guinness is in no way associated with this video," Diageo PLC, the parent company of the famous Irish stout, said in a statement this week. "This is not how we want our brand portrayed."

Ah well. Never let the truth spoil a good story.

The Realities Of Modern Television Advertising

Opinionated businessman Mark Cuban has a recent blog post where he rails against something that gets on all our nerves: loud TV commercials:

Mark Cuban: How Advertisers Shoot Themselves In Their Collective Feet

With all the technology and alternatives to watching commercials on TV I would think that advertisers would do everything humanly possible to eliminate any elements that would immediately trigger a viewer to fast forward to change the channel.

Is this not commen senese ?

If it is, then why in the world do advertisers JACK UP THE VOLUME OF THEIR COMMERCIALS ?

Like any other business endeavor, some advertising gurus are brilliant, others are average, and some are stupid.

Way back in the 80's when the "mute" button came into common use, good advertisers learned that they needed to make their commercials get their brand message across even with the sound off.

Nowadays, all of my TV watching is pre-recorded on my PVR, which means that I skip past the commercials on 3x fast forward. Something I've noticed is that even at high speed, some commercials still make a branding statement, whereas others only show confused glimpses.
Obviously, some marketers are doing a good job of dealing with the modern realities of getting through to viewers. But of course, we don't remember the ones that do a good job, we remember the ones that anger us.

Go Daddy = Lamest Contrived Controversy Ever

The blogosphere is already starting to heat up with the feeding frenzy surrounding Go Daddy.com's ridiculous Super Bowl ad campaign.

The less said about it the better, but if you want to see what the vivisection of a company's public image looks like, NameWire is a great place to get started:

NameWire: Go Daddy Builds Danica Patrick’s Beaver into Its Brand Naming

The cringe-inducing ad in question can be viewed here.
