Pop Culture Corner: Does Anybody Really Care About Racy Leaked Pics?

Ho hum, another day, another set of leaked photos of underage poptart Miley Cyrus letting her freak flag fly.

Fox News (of course) just can't get enough jailbait

Whether it's compromising photos of Cyrus, other-Disney princess Vanessa Hugens, or the indiscretions of over-21's like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, or whoever, the media and by association the public never seem to get tired of making dramatic *gasps* and then saying in a stage whisper "Can you believe it?" All the while running the images over, and over and over. Hypocrisy used to be the tribute that vice pays to virtue, now it's a way to chase ratings by running underage nudie pics on Network TV.

The media always acts so shocked when celebrities prove that they're as capable of being drunk, horny, or just plain thoughtless as anyone else.

There was a time when it was easier for celebs to stay on their pedestals. I have to wonder: if the apex of their careers had been in a time of 24-hour gossip news channels, the Internet, tabloid bloggers, and (most importantly) camera phones, would Doris Day have been able to maintain her squeaky clean image, or would Rock Hudson have managed to stay in the closet? I have my doubts.

Hitachi debuts new super flat panels

Thin is definetely in, as brands such as Sharp and now Hitachi are bowing new LCD sets that are thinner than Paris Hilton.

TWICE: Hitachi Unveils 1.5-Inch Ultra Thin LCDs

Hitachi revealed today it has developed a new line of 1.5-inch (35mm) Ultra Thin LCD HDTVS.Hitachi said it expects to be the first among a group of manufacturers preparing ultra-thin flat-panel displays to market the new products. The first Ultra Thin LCD TV series models are set to arrive on Japan’s retail shelves in December.
...
Models in the series will feature the 32-, 37- and 42-inch screen sizes, and the two larger models will have 1080p HD resolution. The 32-inch model, which will have 1366-by-768 resolution, will ship in the U.S. in first quarter of 2008 and the 37- and 42-inch models will ship in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2008. Prices will be announced later.

I'd like to point out that the Hitachi LCD's that I looked at in Denver during CEDIA were fantastic looking. Even better than the *gasp* Sharp LCD's which up until now I have considered to be the top of the heap.

In demo situations at trade shows, most LCD makers are very careful to use HD video demo material that is either still life, such as flowers and bowls of fruit, or very slow side pans, such as pretty girls strolling through forests and meadows. Since LCD's often choke on fast motion, action movies are right out for demos.

The 42-inch Hitachi LCD's in Denver had an HD loop running that included motocross racers tearing along at high speed, and the LCD's performance with fast motion was impressive. Virtually no stair stepping, and zero dropouts and lag.

Granted, I admit that I am a video snob, and most consumers are not going to notice the things that I notice, but Hitachi's entrance in the LCD business looks like a great leap forward.

Paris Hilton released early from jail before the Apple iPhone launch: Coincidence? I think not!

Since The Epicurean Dealmaker has pretty much called me out (deservedly, perhaps) for shamless blogwhoring, I might as well ride this pony all the way.

Paris Hilton!
Paris Hilton!
Paris Hilton!

Apple iPhone!
Apple iPhone!
Apple iPhone!

It's kind of like summoning Beetlejuice.

...I've had a lot of coffee this morning, even by my standards, and I get a little goofy when that happens.

Paris Hilton's 15 minutes over?

Reviewing via Google Analytics the search terms people use to find this blog, I am pleased to inform you that not once this month did anyone use the words "Paris Hilton" to arrive here.

This means that either fewer people care about her exploits than the media would like you to believe, or nobody actually comes here.

Either way, this is significant data.

Paris Hilton makes the news for not doing anything extraordinary

Okay, this headline made me laugh out loud:

On a hunger strike?
Paris Hilton has not eaten or slept since returning to life behind bars on Friday, reports say.

If reports of her social life are to be believed, she never ate or slept anyway.

Goddamnit, why am I still talking about this? I need a shower...
