Fossil and Sony Ericsson unveil the “Caller ID Watch”

TWICE

Fossil, maker of mostly mid-priced watches, has partnered
with Sony Ericsson to create a wristwatch that functions as an accessory to a
cellular phone. Sony Ericsson designed the software for a caller ID watch that
connects to one’s cellular phone via Bluetooth.
The analog/digital watch with
Bluetooth technology will allow the Fossil Caller ID to notify a phone’s user
when the phone is ringing or when a text message is received. It also shows the
name and number of the caller on the watch face and provides the user with the
opportunity to mute or reject the incoming call through the watch, without
having to dig the phone out of a pocket or purse.

It has been said of Noel Lee, the visionary founder of Monster Cable, and the father of the aftermarket CE accessory business that “he invented a cure for which there was no disease” when he began marketing and promoting aftermarket speaker wire and interconnect cables in the 1970’s. Following in his hallowed footsteps, the Sony Ericsson/Fossil team has introduced a product that solves a problem that consumers didn’t even know that they had!

I will say, in all honesty that despite it being kind of a goofy idea, I support 100% any technology that will provide an alternative to people sporting Bluetooth headsets 24/7 and talking nonstop in public, until you aren’t sure whether they’re on the phone, or if they’re schizophrenic.

On the other hand, I think that there is a pleasing ironic symmetry to Sony Ericsson teaming up with a company named “Fossil.”

I think you missed one factor in the creation of the call display watch. Cell phones have become far more common as time telling devices than watches. If a watch maker wants to remain in business, even if its name is Fossil, it is a good idea to pair with a technology which is thriving.
