It must be, since given the intense amount of spin doctoring coming out of both camps, it's difficult to get a clear picture of what the marketplace is actually doing about either format.
The spin has gotten so intense, that it's even coloring the satire.

Whereas the pseudonymous Deep Throat advised Woodward and Bernstein to follow the money, the money will follow the pornographic Deep Throat--partially.
Blu-ray with its strong ties to Sony and Disney has made the production of adult themed material practically a no-go for this format. HD-DVD does not have this problem. The same dichotomy existed between Beta and VHS, with VHS being the preferred format for a certain industry (One could argue how germane this argument is in the current environment of on-demand adult-entertainment, however).
The indisputable fact is that there are more HD-DVD manufacturers and greater marketplace familiarity ("mindshare") with the existing DVD brand. In this capacity, HD-DVD easily gains leverage over their Blu-ray competitors. Sony only manages to shoehorn in the Blu-ray format via the PS3 backdoor, but I suspect with their pooly adopted UMD format, it is a rearguard defense that is ultimately doomed.
It is the battle that the marketplace has seen before between VHS and Beta, albeit written on a media with greater information density in zeros and ones.
Follow the dirty bits. That's where the money will be.
