Whenver somebody tries to express to me that they dislike the work of a popular artist, I have a stock response:
Them: I just hate Avril Lavigne! *
Me: She hates you too. In fact, she was totally cutting you down at the bar last night. I'm sorry that you had to hear it from me.
Seriously, if you don't like someone's music, change the station and quit whining. It's not difficult.

When it comes to popular culture everybody has an opinion, just like they have a bellybutton - and both of them are equally important in our day to day lives.
Hating something/someone isn't the opposite of loving it/them. Indifference would be the true opposite of caring. When people gush their vitriol about a subject I always hear Shakespeare from The Taming of the Shrew:
"Methinks the lady doth protest too much."
We also tend to think our opinions matter because we spend so gawdawful much money on pop culture; and the artists will mostly say anything to get/keep our attention focussed on them, which tends to make the less mature overreact.
Still, when it comes to crazy pronouncements from pop stars I've got compassion for them - in their line of work getting noticed is like trying to be the loudest seagull at the dump.
Now if we spent similar amounts of our own personal money on charities, medical research foundations or educational institutions our opinions would be more like our lungs in terms of importance - and the air being expelled in sharing those opinions would be less hot.
Here's a thought on this topic to contemplate. And another one too.
