Marketing Matters: Broadband over Powerline growth to outstrip cable and DSL
The latest from CE industry researchers Parks & Associates.
The number of U.S. households subscribing to broadband over power line (BPL) services will increase from 400,000 in 2007 to 2.5 million by 2011, according to FTTx and BPL: Analysis and Outlook. This new report from Parks Associates finds consumer and competitive demands will lead to a strong growth rate in residential subscribers for BPL, outpacing other access methods such as DSL and cable over the next five years.
That's a bold statement. But when you consider that most of the infrastructure is already in place to deliver Broadband Over Power Line to both urban and rural users, it doesn't seem far-fetched.
It was just last November that the FCC gave BPL the nod, so expect this story to develop rapidly in 2007.

BPL is technologically flawed. It is an unbalance radiator that produces a tremendous amount of interference with existing licensed broadcast services (first responders, airport control towers) and other part 15 compliant devices.
As an amateur radio operator, BPL is the devil. It has the ability to wipe out large amounts of spectum and raise the noise floor to unacceptable levels.
