Rumors of a "universal player" persist

In a phone conversation today, a highly placed contact at a major retail chain insisted that a "surprise name" was going to bow a universal Blu-ray/HD-DVD player in the new year. Even when I confronted him with the evidence that Sony would never allow that to happen, he wouldn't back down from his assertion. He wouldn't come out and say who either, so I don't know if it's LG or Pioneer, both of whom have denied having anything in the works, or Ricoh, who haven't had much to say lately.

Regardless, I'll believe it when I see it.
