Wireless digital cameras

Where are they going with this, you ask? Read on:

TWICE: Card Makes Digital Cameras Wireless

Eye-Fi has begun selling a Wi-Fi-enabled SD memory card for use in digital cameras.
The 2GB Eye-Fi SD card lets digital cameras connect to wireless home networks and online photo-sharing sites. After a four-step configuration, images can be automatically sent from the camera to a PC/Mac and online simply by turning the camera on within range of a user’s wireless network, said Jef Holove, Eye-Fi CEO.

Holove argued that Eye-Fi would succeed where Wi-Fi-enabled digital cameras had not because of its ease of use and the breadth of its online partner network. “For the most part, wireless hasn’t been easy.” Conversely, the Eye-Fi card “saves times and gets images out of the camera.”

I can see this being a big hit with people who are too lazy to plug their camera into their laptop in order to save or upload their pictures!

Toronto's WiFi OneZone goes live

Toronto, ON, September 6, 2006: Toronto Hydro Telecom has announced that
Phase 1 of its new WiFi network, called One Zone, is now live in
the city’s downtown financial core, marking the largest WiFi network currently
available in Canada.
Phase 1 marks WiFi availability in the
six square kilometre area bounded by Front St. and Bloor St.; Spadina Ave. and
Church St. (north of Queen St.); and Bathurst St. and Parliament St. (south of
Queen St.) Phase 2, which will extend coverage north to College St., is
scheduled for completion by October 15. The full network is scheduled to be
completed by the end of December 2006.

I know many of you come here for the snide commentary and snarky bon mots. Sorry guys. I think this is fantastic. Like a bus full of lawyers heading over a cliff, it's a great start. As somebody who spends large parts of his week working with the fiddly bits surrounding wireless/ethernet interfaces, and how they relate to the important detail of actually getting things done, I am aflutter at the expansion of the wireless world. Right now, the WiFi zone in downtown Edmonton is a few square meters, so they have some work to do. Bring it on, I say!
