Design versus execution, versus what the customer really wanted

I just got this cartoon in my email, original artist and source unknown.

While I imagine that it was originally meant to take a poke at the software business, this image encapsulates what can go wrong in the A/V custom integration business, especially if you either don't read my magazine articles in CE Pro and Marketnews, or you fail to heed the advice I give out there.

The two Plans and three Rules of business:

PLAN A

Rule #1 Qualify your customer's needs.
(So that you understand them.)

Rule #2 Qualify your customer's needs.
(So that she/he understands them - so often they actually don't.)

Rule #3 Qualify your customer's needs.
(So you are BOTH sure.)

Proceed with confidence.

OR

PLAN B

Just keep hammering at it until everybody gives up or settles for what is.

How often we settle for Plan B.
