It's probably nothing, but at the moment, the sites for Marketnews, Canadian Business, and The Toronto Star, all based in Toronto are down. Major utility outage? Act of Terror? Alien invasion?
I guess we'll find out.

Life imitating art or vice versa here. Isn't it the ultimate sci-fi premise that the HUGE WHATSIS can be defeated by inserting a paper clip at the correct point? We seem to be hanging lots of infrastructure onto fewer and fewer pegs. I have a close personal friend who manages the power grid out here in Flatland and that is the single biggest problem he has to deal with. Knock one domino over and the whole shebang goes.
I don't know if all the sites you saw affected are serviced by the same server farm or all caught the same computer virus simultaneously or even went down for scheduled (or unscheduled) maintenance simultaneously, but it does cause me to suspect that the end of our post-modern civilization will probably be proceeded by this scenario -
"What's THIS button do?"

"Oh, poop!"
