CEDIA cancels Spring Expo

Marketnews - Gadget Talk: Trade Show? Yes Trade Show? No

The Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) had industry members talking this time one year ago when it confirmed the addition of a second trade show, which would take place in April, and cater to architects, designers, builders, IT/security managers, and other professional trades. (CEDIA's "regular" show takes place every year in early September, and is targeted to custom A/V integrators). Now, the association says that it's nixing the second show, due to "market conditions" and "member feedback", and continuing with a more intimate round-table forum that helps unite architects, builders, and interior designers with custom A/V professionals.

CEDIA: CEDIA Cancels Spring Expo

CEDIA has canceled their Spring Expo, originally planned for April 29-May 2 in Dallas. “Though there was support for the recently announced Spring EXPO concept initially, member feedback regarding market condition changes and other factors have prompted CEDIA to step back from Spring EXPO at this time and focus on education and expanding the exposure opportunities with architects, builders and interior designers at the third annual Electronic Lifestyles Forum,” the association wrote in an e-mail to members on Tuesday afternoon.

For the record, nobody I know in the industry has ever expressed to me any positive feelings about CEDIA's decision to offer a second Expo in the Spring. So I'm not sure how their "feedback" could have shifted, unless a whole bunch of CEDIA members stared at their shoes and mumbled "Yeah, sure. Um...great." when asked the first time.

A full blown trade show is a major undertaking, and every integrator I know is working hard, and can barely take a week off for the Fall Expo, so I can't imagine what made them think a second show every year was a viable idea.
