Sony gets with the program on music downloads

Last week the CE giant took a big step into the 21st century
by effectively realigning its digital music business and announcing plans to
scrap its Connect online service as soon as next spring. Sony also introduced
several new video-enabled Walkman devices capable of playing multiple non-Sony
file formats including MP3, WMA and AAC, saying that its DRM-crippled ATRAC
music format will be phased out along with Connect. The new Walkman players will
be based on Microsoft's Windows Media Player platform.

This is great news. Although it is a little galling to see Sony acting like it was all their idea:

"With this initiative, Sony is debuting an important option
for digital media players as it opens new doors for a rich digital experience,"
said Dave Wascha, Microsoft's director of Windows Client Product
Management.

But hey, they're doing their part to send DRM to its grave, we can permit them a little face-saving, I guess.
