Tweeter names some guy to be CEO

TWICE: Tweeter Names New CEO

George Granoff has been named the new CEO of Tweeter Newco.
He replaces the former CEO, Joe McGuire, who
resigned Monday.
The
announcement was made by Schultze Asset Management, an investment group
specializing in distressed businesses that
acquired Tweeter in July for $38
million.
Granoff’s experience includes the roles of president and COO at both
Ames Department Stores and at Bradlees. He has also been CEO of Party City, CEO
of art specialty retailer The Art Store, and founder and CEO of Sherborn
Optical.
"For Tweeter, we now have a fresh voice at the top. George [Granoff]
is new to Tweeter but brings such a wealth of experience. Without a doubt, we're
now ready to move forward swiftly. It's a great day for this great company,"
said Tweeter chairman George Schultze.

Generally speaking, in retail C-suite parlance, "wealth of experience" translates to "has never held a job for longer than two years."

On the one hand, you can read a resume like that as either "Hired Gun and Problem Solver," or alternatively "Great salesman who can talk his way into any job, even if he doesn't know what to do once he gets there." Or as the pointy haired boss in Dilbert once said "I don't need to know what we make. A great manager can manage anything!"

From experience, the only thing I've ever seen a Hired Gun do well at is swinging the axe, and it sounds like Schultze Asset Management already has a pretty good handle on taking care of that.

The question is, what is a guy who has been at Party City and the Art Store (presumably he was shortlisted at least once for top spots at Oshkosh B'Gosh and Dollarama) going to bring to the table to turn an iconic CE retailer around?

"Tweeter and the Monkeyman were hard up for cash.

They stayed up all night selling cocaine and hash -

To an undercover cop who had a sister named "Jan"

Who for reasons unexplained, loved the Monkeyman.

And the walls came down

All the way to hell.

Never saw them when they're standing.

Never saw them when they fell."

lyrics from Tweeter and the Monkeyman from the LP The Traveling Wilburys - Vol. 1

I'm not sure what this has to do with biz over at Tweeter these days, but every time you blog about it I hear this song in my head (the Headstones' version).

Keep on Rockin' in the Free World
