This week in Marketnews: Power management is your friend

Marketnews: Custom Corner: Harnessing the Power of System Designs

Shameless product placement plug: The S20 from APC, pictured above, is an absolute beast of a power center. Surge suppression, line conditioning, voltage regulation and UPC, it is a tank. In testing, we beat the crap out of it in our showroom, and it sailed with flying colors through everything we did to it. In the field, it has performed admirably. It is the Mercedes S-class of power centres.

Being an amateur radio operator, I can't emphasize the need for stable, clean and consistent power. Something that would be of interest to those with high end equipment of any type are whole house surge protectors. For a small investment (a couple of hunderd with installation), you can put up a front line defense against those nasty little power surges.

Check out some of the offerings from the radio world....

Then follow a whole house surge protector with device from APC and you will be protecting your investment quite nicely.

As it happens, Mr Farley and I have a mutual friend whose house suffered a calamity when a lineman from the power company was working on a transformer on his neighborhood block and shorted the hot and the ground. Every home on the line got a dose of 220v/120v down the ground, frying appliances and electronics all down the street. Hopefully the lineman wasn't hurt when he blew the transformer like that, but you can never, ever be too careful with high voltage.
