Target gives Blu-ray the nod

At the moment, my perception is that Blu-ray is slowly gaining ground on HD-DVD, like an inexorable wave of red checkers chips flooding the board. Okay, maybe that's not such a great analogy, but it's 5am, and I'm writing this with one eye open.

Still, Blu-ray seems to be gaining ground.

TWICE: Target Adds Sony BD Players

Target has agreed to sell Sony Blu-ray Disc players as its exclusive next-generation high-definition disc players this holiday season, Sony said today.
The exclusive deal, which will begin this fall and continue “at least through the holiday season,” will feature
Sony’s $499 BDP-S300 Blu-ray player, which is scheduled to arrive at Target in October, and the currently available PlayStation3 video game console, which also plays Blu-ray Disc movies.
Target will also support the players with an “expanded assortment of Blu-ray Disc movies.”

I love this next part:

In a statement Target said: "Target is committed to providing our guests with exceptional technology solutions. Blu-ray is one of many solutions that our guests will find at Target.
"We are not proclaiming one format vs. the other as the preferred consumer technology, and software will continue to be available to our guests in both the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. We are simply merchandising Blu-ray hardware as the initial foray into this exciting category. As with all of our merchandise, we will track guest feedback and adjust as necessary."

Really? Because offering only one format's hardware sure looks like you're taking a side. I wonder what Target's sell-through on both Blu-ray and HD-DVD software looks like, and what impact those metrics had on the hardware merchandising decision?

Offering only one choice of two and then claiming to "track guest feedback" is like having a sales person hang out at the fitting rooms and asking the husbands "Does your wife look fat in this outfit she's trying on?" while the spouse is standing right there.

You KNOW the answer before you even ask the question.

Remember the new retail mantra:

"It's not about selling you what you want - it's about making you buy what we have to sell!"

Shalom People!
(If you can.)
