More sensible, unfuzzy thinking about North America's misguided careening towards fuel crops from the cranky yet eminently sensible WC Varones.

Now comes the U.N., never content to let five concise and complete paragraphs stand, to say the same thing in a 60-page paper. Sphere: Related Content

I believe I've addressed this issue here before, but if not I must recommend this article by Patrick Bedard:

Ethanol is the "fool's gold" of the Global Climate Change movement. It will most likely hasten, not slow the effects of greenhouse gasses on our environment. It has become a political response that is palatable because it (falsely) promises to also increase jobs, farm income and insulate the North American (read "USA") market from "unstable" foreign oil.
If you'd like an easy way to increase efficiency and decrease emissions here it is. Proper tire inflation can increase fuel efficiency by up to 3%.

If the Canadian and US Governments mandated the adoption of nitrogen tire inflation for all private and commercial vehicles the whole North American fleet would become 3-5% more efficient. And the great thing about nitrogen is it's virtually maintenance free. In the last 5 years I have NEVER needed to add nitrogen to my tires summer or winter unless there was a leak caused by a puncture. This is the perfect solution for we North Americans who couldn't be bothered to maintain anything if our lived depended on it. Actually, our live just might.
And there will be NO mercury to clean up afterwards.
