HP, a supporter of both high-definition formats, will release two PCs with combo drives capable of playing both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs, the company announced today.
The HP Pavilion Media Center m8010y series and HP Pavilion d4890y series will be available for configuration with a Blu-ray disc writer/HD DVD optical drive beginning on May 9. The drive will allow reading and writing of Blu-ray discs and reading of HD DVD media.

Okay, great. Many brands have chosen to support both formats with hardware that is dual compatible. But this still begs the question: why do we still need two different formats? Don't get me wrong, I think it's nice that this alleged format war has morphed into a Care Bears' Picnic, where everybody is a winner. I just don't understand why the market needs both formats, whether or not they co-exist.
